What is AMBOSS?

AMBOSS is an integrated medical knowledge platform that pairs a question bank, a clinical reference library, and study tools with AI features. Founded in 2012 in Berlin, it began as a licensing-exam preparation platform (USMLE, COMLEX, Shelf) and expanded into clinician board review and point-of-care reference. Its clinician AI, “AI Mode Clinical Care” (LiSA 1.0), returns brief answers and directs users to curated sources rather than acting as an autonomous answer engine. AMBOSS reports more than 1 million professional users across 180 countries, and in March 2025 raised a EUR 240M financing round led by KIRKBI, M&G Investments, and Lightrock.

What is AMBOSS best at?

• Independently benchmarked safety. LiSA 1.0 ranked #1 overall for clinical safety among 31 AI systems in the independent Stanford/Harvard/ARISE NOHARM benchmark published February 2026. This is one of the few genuinely independent results in the space, though it is specific to LiSA 1.0 versus that 31-system field as of that date.
• Integrated ecosystem. Question bank, reference library, study tools, and AI are linked together, which suits clinicians who already live in AMBOSS for exam prep.
• Multilingual and offline. English and German content, multilingual semantic search, and offline-capable apps.

What are AMBOSS’s limitations?

• Paid, with pricing complexity. AMBOSS is a subscription product with no free clinician tier beyond a short trial; full question-bank access is a paid add-on on top of the base membership.
• Exam-prep heritage. Reviewers describe its questions as denser and harder than the exams themselves, and its Step question bank is smaller than category leader UWorld.
• Assistive, not autonomous. The clinician AI is a search-and-direct agent that requires clinician verification, and depth on complex inpatient medicine is narrower than UpToDate or DynaMed.
